Lecture about Improvisation in the Design Process at University of Vechta.

DDC Award for re/set. The design conference re/set received a DDC-Award in the Newcomer Category for its graphic concept. Together with Sophia Preußner, the graphic designer of the conference, we developed a ci that was used in various media: print, online and even for the event itself. The conference that was inititated by Prof. Peter Eckart of HfG Offenbach took place in may 2014, it is part of my research on the design process.

New project Pre-Mould lamps with glass factory Steklarna Hrastnik at BIO 50 (Biennial of Design in Ljubljana). I was selected amongst other european designers to participate in the BIO50 design biennial in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The biennial has a collaborative and participatory approach, and I am part of the group »Hidden Craft« that is mentored by Tulga Beyerle. The task is to make a design for a local producer.
Statement by Jan Boelen, director of BIO:
Fifty years ago, it was the changes in everyday life that led to the foundation of the Biennial of Industrial Design. The driving force behind BIO’s foundation was the ambition to establish design as an integral part of the industrial production of objects for a better everyday life. At the first edition of the biennial, architect Marjan Tepina called industrial design an indispensable discipline of the socialist social order and designing objects for a better everyday life thus became a part of the (socialist) modernization project. For the next fifty years, BIO exhibitions tried to present the best in design and the best in industrial production. With international selection, comparison and evaluation of exhibits, BIO strived to highlight the outstanding within the average. Early on in its history, there were also discussions on what BIO should be, as well as calls for a more direct approach to questions on the role of design in society (BIO 5, BIO 7). New industrial products helped make life more comfortable, but it soon became clear there is also a downside to industrial production and consumerism. Can life really be made better with more new, albeit well-designed consumer products – the question appeared, so to speak, of its own accord.

The Design Museum Holon writes:
Disdain for a boring global market coupled with a fear of the virtualisation of society has inspired designers to create work that is linked to the humanisation of the making process and the contextualisation of a more responsible lifestyle. Craft has therefore become one of the major movements of our time and can be understood as the repetition of skills that belong to our common past, exuding a sense of belonging and continuity.

MAK DESIGN LABOR Wien. Die Improvisationsmaschine und meine Rotationsgussleuchten sind Teil des MAK DESIGN LABOR, die neugestaltete Studiensammlung des MAK Wien. Themen des Design Labors sind u.a. Methoden der postindustriellen Produktion.
Hierzu schreibt das MAK:
Design hat die Aufgabe, unser Leben zu verbessern. Heute steht es vor der Herausforderung, das Wohlstandsstreben Einzelner mit langfristigen gesellschaftlichen Interessen in Einklang zu bringen. Dazu zählen nachhaltige Entwicklung, sozialer Zusammenhalt und lebenslange Bildung. Die Digitalisierung eröffnet neue Spielräume, die es für einen positiven Wandel zu nutzen gilt. Das MAK DESIGN LABOR gründet auf dieser veränderten Rolle von Design. Zugleich erweitert es den im 20. Jahrhundert geprägten Designbegriff auf frühere Jahrhunderte: Funktion und Gebrauch von Objekten stehen im Mittelpunkt und rücken historisches Kunsthandwerk näher an heutige Fragestellungen. […] Seit der Industrialisierung im 19. Jahrhundert gibt es immer wieder kritische Stimmen zu den Auswirkungen von Massenproduktion und Konsumgesellschaft und folglich Zweifel an unverrückbar scheinenden Grundsätzen im Design, das lange als „Diener des Marketings“ galt. Der technische Fortschritt, einheitliche Standards und eine auf Wettbewerb ausgerichtete Wirtschaft erzeugen zwar einen vermeintlich demokratischen Markt von Waren, doch zu welchem Preis? Wenn wir weiterhin für einen Lebensstil auf Kosten künftiger Generationen produzieren, wird die Erde zunehmend unbewohnbar. Die Suche nach Alternativen geht verschiedene Wege, greift auf althergebrachte, handwerkliche Methoden zurück oder verlegt sich auf neue Herstellungsweisen, um Waren dort erzeugen zu können, wo der Bedarf entsteht. Nachhaltigkeit im Design zu verwirklichen heißt, Produktion und Konsum für eine sich wandelnde Gesellschaft neu zu denken. Wir zeigen Lösungsansätze der jüngsten Zeit, die sich zum Teil noch im Versuchsstadium befinden.

»[…]Design objects are not like archaeologic artifacts that are discovered, grubbed out and then unriddled. Design objects always relate to their social, technical and functional context. This context constitutes the particular story of the design product. The product, in the smaller sense, always relates to a multitude of operations that were necessary to establish the original idea for the product. The design product is then being reproduced using this idea (which is often incorporated by a model or prototype). The specific constellation of techniques, materials and the designer himself that constitute the design process are the moment of originality of the serial product. Thus we are exhibiting the process (as a story) that is containing this moment of originality.«

DI, 1. Oct 2013, 20.00: DIY- NITE at MAK Vienna. I did a rotational molding workshop at MAK Vienna (MAK-SÄULENHALLE), and my Improvisation Machine is also part of the exhibition NEW NOMADIC FURNITURE at MAK Vienna.
»Ein DIY-Happening anlässlich der Ausstellung NOMADIC FURNITURE 3.0. Neues befreites Wohnen? zeigt zeitgenössische Strategien des Selbstbaus von Möbeln als kollektiven Prozess. Die d>nite ist eine Kooperationsveranstaltung von MAK und departure –Die Kreativagentur der Stadt Wien und stellt einen Höhepunkt der MAK Specials anlässlich der VIENNA DESIGN WEEK (27.9.–6.10.2012) dar. Die Ausstellung bildet den Hintergrund für eine kritisch-reflektierte Auseinandersetzung mit diesem mittlerweile altbewährten Designphänomen zwischen den Polen von Mainstream und Alternativkultur. Low-Tech-Möbelbau zum Mitmachen wird von den ProtagonistInnen der Ausstellung breadedEscalope (AT), chmara.rosinke (PL), Annika Frye (DE), raumlabor berlin (DE), Jerszy Seymour (UK) und mischer’traxler (AT) vorgestellt. In der Ausstellung wird die DIY Entwicklung erstmals speziell in Bezug auf den Bereich des Möbeldesigns und die Gestaltung von Wohnräumen untersucht und gebündelt. Die noch immer stetig wachsende Nachfrage nach Bauanleitungen für Möbel und Einrichtungsgegenstände ist dabei Anlass, die aktuellen Verfahrensweisen im historischen Rückblick zu erkunden. Bei der DESIGN (IT-YOURSELF) NITE kommt die Mobile Bugholz-Küche von breadedEscalope zum Einsatz, bei der DIY-Thonets im einfachen Biegeverfahren entstehen. Das Designerduo chmara.rosinke präsentiert drei neue Selbstbaumöbel, die aus dem Kontext der Ausstellung entwickelt wurden. Ihre Selbstbau-Analyse „How to DIY“, die sie gemeinsam mit AkteurInnen für die Ausstellung umgesetzt haben, kann an diesem Abend direkt mit den SelberbauerInnen diskutiert und getestet werden. Anika Frye betreibt ihre „Improvisationsmaschine“, die Lampenschirme erzeugt. Die Ausstellungsgestalter raumlaborberlin zeigen, wie ihr experimentelles Baulabor „Generator“ funktioniert, das schon bei der Architektur Biennale in Venedig zum Einsatz kam. Jerzy Seymour wird den Amateur-Workshop „Anarchy as a rythm“ durchführen, bei dem Holzteile mit Hilfe von niedrigschmelzendem Kunststoff verbunden werden können. Und Erste Hilfe bei Möbelnot leisten mischer’traxler mit dem Schnellkurs „f.aid“, bei dem unter Verwendung spezieller Mullbinden aus alten Brettern neue Möbel entstehen. Machen Sie mit und nehmen Sie Ihr selbstgebautes DIY-Möbel mit nach Hause!«
